Global warming by microwaves and not CO2

Microwaves can cause polar molecules to rotate. When they rotate they can lose their ‘microwaved’ energy by rotational based collisions, dissipating the energy in the form of heat in the process. That’s how a microwave oven works. Or so the theory goes.

Water is particularly sensitive to the microwaves, particularly the wavelengths employed in ovens.

Here then is a spur-of-the-moment thought.

Cellular communication (‘mobile phone’) networks need to be cellular due to signal drop off over relatively short distances. I speculate this is due to water and polar pollutants absorbing the microwaves. These molecular/particulate absorbers will therefore convert that EM radiation into heat radiation.

So IF what I say above is true, and 120 -> 380 ppb CO2 was such a big deal in terms of global warming, why then are are microwaves not demonized, especially given their proliferation over the last decade? Is it simply because nobody has (yet) thought of a way to milk money from people be cracking down on mobile phone use? so the chance they may contribute to global warming doesn’t matter?

Note : I don’t know the frequency that cellular networks broadcast on, the intensity of signal transmission or what the absorbtivity is at the wavelengths used.

Petrol pricey? Japanese invent car that runs on water
Fri Jun 13, 2008 1:23pm BST
TOKYO (Reuters Life!) – Tired of petrol prices rising daily at the pump? A Japanese company has invented an electric-powered, and environmentally friendly, car that it says runs solely on water.

Genepax unveiled the car in the western city of Osaka on Thursday, saying that a liter (2.1 pints) of any kind of water — rain, river or sea — was all you needed to get the engine going for about an hour at a speed of 80 km (50 miles).

“The car will continue to run as long as you have a bottle of water to top up from time to time,” Genepax CEO Kiyoshi Hirasawa told local broadcaster TV Tokyo.

“It does not require you to build up an infrastructure to recharge your batteries, which is usually the case for most electric cars,” he added.

Once the water is poured into the tank at the back of the car, the a generator breaks it down and uses it to create electrical power, TV Tokyo said.

Whether the car makes it into showrooms remains to be seen. Genepax said it had just applied for a patent and is hoping to collaborate with Japanese auto manufacturers in the future.

Most big automakers, meanwhile, are working on fuel-cell cars that run on hydrogen and emit — not consume — water.

No, not the classic Booker T and the MG’s song, but a modern and environmemtally friendly version of a white elephant.

 BMW's H7 range

BMW’s and their lovely new car have just featured on BBC worlds’ Asia Today program. Just who thinks Germany and BMW qualify for that program I dont know, but still, what do you expect of a TV station that reports a World Trade Centre building has collapsed about 20 minutes before it actually did, well… what can you say.

Anyway, featuring on the program was a new hydrogem powered car. This snippet of a report took a global warming slant. The proud BMW spokesman boasted it was virtually CO2 free, obviously to make us think his car was ‘good’ whereas others are ‘bad’. CO2 is “bad” you see, becasue it is a greenhouse gas once you dispel CO2 from the equation everything else if flowers. Screw pollution – it’s irrelevant right?

Therefore (or so the logic goes) this new car is the answer to our prayers, and as you savour that thought, I’ll leave you with a little quiz..
1) How much energy is needed to produce liquified hydrogen? and what is the fuel is used in generating it?

2) What do you get when you burn hydrogen?

3) Which is the ‘strongest’ greenhouse ‘gas’? CO2(0.037% of the atmosphere average) or water vapour(1.96% of the atmosphere average)?[1]

Caveat: The H2 produced is from water which reforms on combustion whereas a fossil fuel introduces new CO2 into the atmosphere but still it illustrates well the ‘spinability’ one can employ when it comes to ‘green’ issues. There is a way to make green hydrogen, it’s via phototolysis, but the nature of water makes this process much more difficult than say photolysis of halogens.

[1] “levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are now 35 per cent greater than they have been for at least the last 650,000 years.” – Assuming worst case senario 650,000 years ago there was 0.037% CO2 in the atmosphere (and not that 0.037% is todays figure) that means that SHOCK HORROR!!! there is now 0.050 % CO2 in the atmosphere. OH GOD, WERE ALL GONNA DIE!
BUT WAIT!!! maybe it’s worse than that as on another RSoc page, {} the 35% increase isn’t what we mortals would calculate it as i.e. from 280 ppm to 350 ppm, NO, far from it! Global warming has obviously affected mathematics giving a 35% increase from 280 to 380ppm. Aaaaaagh! Mathematics warming! (damn typo before)

[2] “Water vapour is the most significant greenhouse gas. It occurs naturally, {So does CO2! they forgot to add} although global warming caused by human activities will indirectly affect how much is in the atmosphere through {Indirecly schimdireclty}, for example, increased evaporation from oceans and rivers. This will, in turn, cause either cooling or warming depending {OR COOLING!!!!! they say} on what form such as different types of clouds the water vapour occurs in. “Humans have been adding to the effect of water vapour and other naturally occurring greenhouse gases by pumping greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide into the atmosphere through, for example, the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation.

{Note: lets not mention the “inconventient truth” that nuclear powerstations produce large quantities of the greenhouse gas (steam) in greatest abundance, nor lets get too hung up on the 200 tonnes of plutonium a plant like this produces which produces a plumb pudding of highly radioactive isotopes some with half lives of half a million years, where as a pesky hurricane lasts a few weeks and a flood – Yes, lets not Carbon = ‘bad’ Plutonium = good.}  {}
