9—11: TEN YEARS AFTER. By Dr Chandra Muzaffar

Dr. Chandra Muzaffar is President of the International Movement for a Just World (JUST) and Professor of Global Studies at UniversitiSains Malaysia.

7th September 2011.

On the 10th anniversary of the 9-11 tragedy, it would be instructive to reflect on the disastrous impact of that tragedy upon the entire human family.

One, hundreds of thousands, perhaps a couple of million, lives have been lost in Iraq, Afghanistan, the Afghan-Pakistan border and other places as a direct or indirect consequence of the so-called “war on terror”  that followed 9-11. It is not just the violence generated by the US helmed occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan that is responsible for this. Terror groups that resist occupation or are seekingto avenge the death of innocent children and women at the hands of the occupiers, or those who are embroiled in the tussle for power or enmeshed in inter-sectarian and inter-factional feuds—like Al-Qaeda— are also culpable.

Two, it is estimated that at least3.7 trillion US dollars have been poured into the two wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. This colossal military expenditure has emasculated the US economy and is one of the major causes of the nation’s chronic debt crisis which in turn has serious implications for economies everywhere.

Three, the war on terror has led to the marginalisation of other more important wars that the global community had pledged to fight at the beginning of the 21st century, such as the war against global poverty and global illiteracy. It has also diverted attention fromthe challenge of widening disparities between those who have a lot and those who have a littlewhich has become a global phenomenon threatening social cohesion and stability in many parts of the world.

Four, the obsession with terrorism has prompted a number of governments to introduce or expand repressive laws that curtail legitimate civil rights and liberties. Illegal incarcerations, torture and assassinations have been carried out in the name of fighting terror.

Five, the terror war has spawned a new wave of Islamophobia. Fearand hatred of Islam and Muslims which is deeply embedded in the psyche of a segment of Western society has been thrust to the fore through the equation of the religion and its adherents with terrorism. Some politicians, religious leaders and a section of the mainstream media are responsible for this diabolical bigotry. Consequently, Muslims and their religious symbols have become  targets of venom in various parts of the Western world.A fanatical fringe within the Muslim ummah( community) has reacted to this by venting anti-Christian and anti-Jewish bile in their sermons and their writings. The end result is a general deterioration in relations among people of different faiths.

How do we overcome, or at least reduce, the negative impact of the 9-11 episode? Both the centres of power in the West and certain elements in the Muslim world should be prepared to come to grips with some irrefutable truths.

One, those who are committed to truth and justice in North America and Europe should try to convince their fellow citizens through all the democratic channels available to them, that Western elites are the real perpetrators of terror and violence.  In their quest for hegemony—often related to oil, or geostrategic interests or Israel or simply power— these elites have created fear and terror among millions of innocent people by subjecting them to continuous bombing raids and missile attacks for months on end. This is the terrorism of the militarily powerful, of the hegemonic state or empire. In the last 10 years since 9-11, we have seen that invariably it results in much more death and destruction than the terrorism ofthose who act in retaliation. Western elites should be made to understand this simple truth by their own people.

Two, in order to reach out to the truth, these elites should begin by re-visiting the 9-11 tragedy. Thereare many unanswered questions about that event that men and women of conscience have continued to ask in the last 10 years— questions such as the actual identities of the hijackers; why the hijacked airliners were not intercepted; what was the real cause of the collapse of the Twin Towers and Building 7 of the World Trade Centre; and whether the Pentagon was hit by a Boeing 757. Scholars of repute in Europe and the US like Hans Kochler, David Ray Griffin, Peter Dale Scott and James Fetzer have challenged the official version of 9-11.It is because the doubts about 9-11 are so widespread that JUST is of the view that the UN General assembly should establish a truly independent international panel to ascertain the truth once and for all.

Three, while Western governments and peoples have their roles to play vis-à-vis   9-11, the Muslim ummah as a whole has also got the responsibility to ensure that the militant fringe within the community renounces terrorism as  a weapon to achieve its goals. Apart from the vile and vicious cruelty inherent in terrorism, it is a mode of operation that has tarnished the image of Islam and Muslims worldwide. Whatever its short-term gains, the use of violence and terror against civilians has encouraged a sort obscurantism which prevents both Muslims and non-Muslims alike from realising that the essence of the Islamic message is  the struggle for justice and peace without force or coercion.

This is why it is in our interest, in the interests of everyone —10 years after 9-11– to strengthen our resolve to combat terrorism, and its underlying causes, in all its manifestations.

BLAIR INVITATION: Blair’s a blot on this lecture series

There is worldwide opposition to the near-ritualistic resource-thieving imperialistic slaughter of innocents around the world by those that say they are leading us(to our graves). It very much fragmented however; but sometimes unavoidably so in order to foment awareness and coordination somewhere in the global village.

The World Tribunal on Iraq (WTI) was somewhat of an extraordinary event. It brought together humans(with souls and compassion) from across the planet, to do what needed to be be done. Unfortunately due to it’s lack of ‘official’ clout, it’s findings have yet to be carried out. The ‘system’ isn’t entertaining the WTI and that’s natural enough, after all, the system is often only interested in enforces the ‘justice’ which sustains itself.

This brings me onto that most horrific of men Tony Blair. He’s winging his way around this part of the Globe at the considerable expense of the British taxpayer – not his expense you will note. Just like liar Blair delivered lectures in the US, he’s gave a lecture in “University Malaya” reputed to be Malaysias top University. And he lectured on Law. His disgraceful presence didn’t go unnoticed or unprotested. Here’s the contents of an e-mail one of my knowledgeable friends sent to me featuring one of Malaysia’s finest minds, Dr. Chandra Muzzafar. He wrote to one of Malaysia’s papers about this killer on the loose…

BLAIR INVITATION: Blair’s a blot on this lecture series

By : DR CHANDRA MUZAFFAR, President International Movement for a Just World (JUST)
{ http://www.just-international.org/ }

Dr. Chandra Muzzafar :)
“How could local human rights lawyers and human rights activists, who are quick to react to the slightest human rights transgression in the country, listen to the lecture of a man who helmed a war borne of monstrous lies and monumental deception — a war which because of the huge human carnage and the devastating impact upon an entire nation constitutes the most heinous human rights violation of the 21st century?”

Three years ago, the World Tribunal on Iraq (WTI) charged the British government, then under prime minister Tony Blair, and the United States government of George W. Bush with “planning, preparing and waging the supreme crime of a war of aggression in contravention of the United Nations Charter and the Nuremberg Principles”.

The tribunal also charged the two governments with targeting the civilian population of Iraq and civilian infrastructure; using disproportionate force and weapons systems with indiscriminate effects, such as cluster munitions, incendiary bombs, depleted uranium and chemical weapons; subjecting Iraqi soldiers and civilians to torture and cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment; and failing to protect humanity’s rich archaeological and cultural heritage by allowing the looting of museums and historical sites and positioning military bases in culturally and archeologically sensitive locations.

These charges were made after deliberations by the WTI’s 14-member Jury of Conscience, of which I was a member. The jury met in Istanbul from June 24 to 26, 2005, at the end of a series of 20 hearings held in different cities of the world. In Istanbul alone, we heard 54 testimonies from advocates and witnesses from across the world, including Iraq, the US and Britain.

The panel was headed by one of the world’s most distinguished authorities on international law, Professor Emeritus Richard Falk.

Among the recommendations of the jury were “that there be an exhaustive investigation of those responsible for the crime of aggression, war crimes and crimes against humanity in Iraq, beginning with Bush and Blair, those in key decision-making positions in these countries and in the Coalition of the Willing, those in the military chain-of-command who masterminded the strategy for and carried out this criminal war, starting from the very top and going down; as well as personalities in Iraq who helped prepare this illegal invasion and supported the occupiers”.

Though Blair has not been convicted by a court of law like the International Criminal Court in The Hague, the fact that a tribunal “located in the collective conscience of humanity”, representing the citizenry of the world, has charged him with war crimes and crimes against humanity in Iraq should make any peace-loving person sit up and take notice. And yet, the University of Malaya saw fit to invite Blair to deliver the 22nd Sultan Azlan Shah Law Lecture on Aug 1 in Kuala Lumpur.

Have the organisers of the lecture series forgotten that their guest speaker is the initiator (together with Bush) of an unjust, immoral war that has already killed more than 1.2 million people, the vast majority of them civilians, and maimed tens of thousands of others? How could local human rights lawyers and human rights activists, who are quick to react to the slightest human rights transgression in the country, listen to the lecture of a man who helmed a war borne of monstrous lies and monumental deception — a war which because of the huge human carnage and the devastating impact upon an entire nation constitutes the most heinous human rights violation of the 21st century?

It is sad but true that the act of honouring Blair has demeaned the Sultan Azlan Shah Law Lecture series and tarnished the University of Malaya.

I replied to my friend and the other cc’ers…(amended)

Last week I was sickened to discover that Tony Blair, the joint killer of over one million people (and that’s just in Iraq!) was being treated as a dignitary as he toured around KL. When in fact, he should have been treated to a cell pending trial for his horrific crimes against humanity.

The World tribunal on Iraq (WTI) is legendary for doing what the mainstream deliberately failed and continues to fail to do, which is: put the genocide in the public spotlight in its wicked and brutal form and advocate bringing its architects to justice.

It is almost diagnostic that just three short days after Blair spoke, Alexander Solzhenitsyn, a man who borne witness to the repugnant violence man inflicts upon his fellow man left us forever. Solzhenitsyn was just one of many thousands of men spanning thousands of years, whose message we still ignore, and are deceived into ignoring.
I often ask myself, sometimes with tears rolling down my cheeks, when will the world shun merciless killers like Tony Blair?

To rub salt into the wounds, the hundreds of millions of wounds by his hands, Mr. Blair has the nerve to lecture us about law and that globalisation is benign.

This monster of a man is not just a savage killer, he’s a pathological liar.

Of course when Blair talks about law he means the law that benefits him and his interests, not the kind of law that Chris Coverdale and others at the Campaign to Make Wars History (http://www.makewarshistory.org.uk) have proved is internationally leglisalated for, making the UK’s involvement (and many other nations besides) in war ILLEGAL. It’s called the 1928 by the International Treaty for the Renunciation of War [the Kellogg-Briand Pact]. You can read the laws yourself here:
http://www.makewarshistory.org.uk/mwh/2008/06/laws-prohibitin.html

So Mr. Blair, you amoral vampire, you most evil of men responsible for bringing tens of into millions to mourning by your legacy of death, how dare you lecture anyone about law.

I offer no apology for the fury you {Mr. Blair} constantly invoke within me.

I, along with hundreds of millions all over the planet, await your trial with much anticipation.
